The most important historical building around the main square is the old town hall with the heraldic frieze – today it is a modern congress centre, hosting the Live Congress Centre.

The classical one-storied gabled buidling with its extending outdoor staircase became important when Napoleon Bonaparte and Austrian diplomats negotiated and signed the preliminary Peace Treaty of Leoben on 18 April 1797.

Former Dominican monastery

The Dominican monastery goes back to the year 1260. These historically remarkable parts of the building that have been classified as historical monuments, were now restored and stylistically integrated into the new LCS (Leoben City Shopping) building, which directly adjoins the main square.

The oldest Styrian monastery with architectural and artistic treasures as well as an early Romanesque crypt is located outside of the old town center in the district of Göss. It is possible to visit the roof truss by prior arrangement.

The completion of the first phase of construction in the Josefee district was crowned by the inauguration of the Gärner Park in 1892. An anti-fascist monument was erected in tribute to the victims of 1939 to 1945 from Leoben.

The long main square has been the heart of Leoben since the settlement of the town within the look of the river Mur in the 13th century. Currently, it is being remodelled to make it climate-friendly.

The first records of the castle date back to the 9th and 10th century. In 1820 practically the entire castle was reduced to debris and ruins. Today, the area offers an attractive viewing platform.

The institution finds its origins in the “Styrian Corporate School of Mining”, founded in 1835. Today it is a world-renowned specialist university, attracting thousands of international students and expanding into new fields of studies.

Next to the river quay in front of the town hall, the Oppenheim sculpture faces the visitors. The “Double Wedding” is eight metres in height and is part of a series called “Engagement”.

This church is a prime example of Gothic architecture in Styria. Most remarkable are the choir windows depicting scenes of the life of Jesus, various saints and figures of the donors to the church.

This small park displays a sculpture of the famous ‘Montanist’ Peter Tunner on exhibit. There is also a bust of Archduke Johann and a bust of the Styrian writer and poet Peter Rosegger.

The church of St. Alphonsus Ligori is one of Leoben’s most recent foundations. Built in the neo-Romanesque style, its west façade featuring a single tower, is particularily impressive and along with the Waasenkirche and Jakobikirche dominates Leoben’s skyline.

Landmark of the city – the toll gateway is the only town gate still maintained. After a heavy earthquake the medieval building was provided with the mushroom-shaped hood, the origin of it’s popular name “Schwammerlturm”.

The parish church of St. Xaver (former Jesuit Church) is early baroque. The magnificently furnished interior with its high altar and the six side chapels with the splendid altars are a real contrast to the façade.

The larger-than-life “dancing miner” greets guests from a height of five metres with a “Glück Auf”. A block of stone from the Styrian Erzberg serves as a counterweight – a clear link to Leoben’s history as an ore and steel town.
