Testing the operability of sirens

It is possible to warn or alert the population in case of emergency with more than 8.000 sirens. To familiarize you with the civil protection signals and at the same time to test the operability of the warning and alert system once a year a Civil Protection Test Alarm is carried out all over Austria, operated jointly by the Federal Alarm Centre at the Federal Ministry of the Interior and the offices of the governments of the Federal Provinces.

Nationwide broadcast of AT-Alert

In addition to the siren test, the digital warning system AT-Alert will also be broadcast nationwide. For more information, please visit www.at-alert.at.

Meaning of the signals

  • Testing of the signals: 15 seconds steady continous tone
  • Warning: 3 minutes steady continous tone – Approaching danger!
    In case of a real emergency: Turn on radio or television (ORF) respectively internet (www.orf.at), follow the rules of conduct.
  • Alarm: 1 minute ascending and descending wail – Danger!
    In case of real emergency: Look for protective areas or rooms, follow the rules of conduct announced over radio or television (ORF) respectively internet (www.orf.at).
  • All-Clear: 1 minute steady continuous tone – End of danger!
    In case of real emergency:Follow further advices via radio or television (ORF) respectively internet (www.orf.at).
